Eat Healthy, Choose Water, Keep Fit
‘Gary Goanna Goes Healthy’ is a storybook and colouring book for young Aboriginal children which promotes key diabetes preventative messages. The book encourages the uptake of three key healthy lifestyle behaviours from a young age: Eat Healthy, Choose Water, Keep Fit.
The Gary Goanna storybook has been distributed far and wide, and has been incorporated into existing programs and promotions within Aboriginal communities. A Storytime for Mums and Bubs program was created specifically to utilise Gary Goanna in spreading diabetes prevention messages.

Diabetes WA partnered with Bandyup Women’s Prison and True Blue Gallery to develop the storybook. The book was tested in the Pilbara region and in Perth with community members and health professionals.
Diabetes WA worked closely with the community to create a culturally appropriate, entertaining, creative storybook that features unique Aboriginal artwork.
The following artwork was created by the women of Bandyup Women’s Prison, to be used in the Gary Goanna Storybook.
