Desert Feet Tour

A creative partnership

Diabetes WA is proud to have previously partnered with the Desert Feet Tour. Desert Feet Tour provides no-cost alcohol-free community concerts and music education workshops to remote communities in Western Australia. The Desert Feet Tour aims to inspire children in these communities to pursue their dreams and talents, with help from talented Aboriginal musicians.

In 2011, a chance meeting led to the Desert Feet Music Tour embarking on a new and exciting partnership with the Diabetes WA Aboriginal Health team. This partnership added a health promotion focus to the project. Between 2011 and 2013 Diabetes WA travelled with the Desert Feet team, delivering interactive healthy lifestyle activities such as cooking, storytelling and art. Following these activities the Desert Feet Crew help the kids write, perform and record songs with healthy messages in them.

The key messages are eat healthy, choose water and keep fit. Incentives that promote healthy lifestyles, such as football boots, story books and water bottles are also used to encourage and reward participation. The children also participate in music workshops where they learn to read music and play different instruments.
